Gynecologist Q & A
Why do I need a gynecologist?
A gynecologist is a medical doctor who has specialized training in women’s health, especially involving reproductive organs. Your gynecologist is part of your overall wellness and preventive health care team, as well as your go-to practitioner for any concerns you have about your reproductive or sexual health. You need a gynecologist to:
- Diagnose abnormal menstrual bleeding or abdominal pain
- Screen for sexually transmitted diseases (STDs)
- Get to the root of urinary incontinence issues
- Screen for precancer or cancer
- Prescribe or implant birth control
- Treat menopausal symptoms
- Treat sexual dysfunction
Your gynecologist is also responsible for keeping tabs on your breast health. If you find lumps, experience breast pain, or notice abnormal discharge from your nipples, your gynecologist is your go-to practitioner.
What happens during a gynecology exam?
Your gynecology exam — a routine evaluation is known as a well-woman exam — begins with sitting down and talking with Dr. Chalian. He wants to know about your family medical history, your personal health background, and any symptoms you’re experiencing. Once Dr. Chalian gets a better understanding of your health, he steps out, has you slip into a gown, and brings a female nurse into the room for your exam.
Most gynecology visits include a pelvic exam, where Dr. Chalian gently places his finger into your vaginal canal and presses on your abdomen to manually feel your reproductive organs. Depending on your needs, your visit may also include a:
- Urinalysis
- Pap smear
- Blood draw
- Breast exam
- Blood pressure check
- Head-to-toe evaluation
Dr. Chalian can also talk with you about family planning and birth control. He offers several different types of birth control — from low-dose pills to intrauterine devices (IUDs) — so you have plenty of options available.
How often do I need to see my gynecologist?
As long as you’re generally healthy, plan on visiting with Dr. Chalian once a year for your well-woman exam. If you had an abnormal Pap test, have a chronic condition (like endometriosis), or otherwise have concerns, Dr. Chalian is likely going to request additional follow-up visits for further screenings and management of treatment plans. Dr. Chalian also wants you to come in for a visit if you’re experiencing:
- Menopause symptoms, like hot flashes
- Pain during intercourse
- Severe menstrual cramps
- Changes in your menstrual cycle
